Anne-Marie Crowe

Audiologist

Anne-Marie obtained her Graduate Diploma in Audiology at Macquarie University and returned to Canberra to commence her career in 1991.
After 15 years working in various roles at Australian Hearing Canberra, including Adult and Paediatric specialist and as Centre Manager, she moved to a recently opened independent private Audiology practice and expanded her audiology skills to include vestibular assessment and the provision of Bone Anchored Hearing Aids and a customised tinnitus treatment.
In 2008 Anne-Marie was approached to join the team at SCIC (Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre) a not-for-profit organisation based in Civic, Canberra. This was a natural progression from managing complex paediatric and adult cases utilising hearing aids through to those clients receiving cochlear implantation and rehabilitation. She went on to manage and further grow the services at this clinic firstly in Civic and then in custom-built rooms co-located in Deakin with Canberra ENT, the medical team who had been performing cochlear implant surgeries for SCIC in Canberra since 2007.
By then SCIC had merged with RIDBC which offered further expansion to include a Canberra-based multi-disciplinary early intervention team. Working in the specialised cochlear implant field cemented Anne-Marie's passion for working with severe and profoundly deaf children and adults and she enjoyed 12 & ½ years in this program.
Over her career Anne-Marie has formed strong relationships with local Ear, Nose and Throat specialists, hearing support groups and other local hearing service providers.  She contributed to the establishment of the Newborn Hearing Screening Program in the ACT and the annual Hearing Awareness Week Expo.  She has previously been a committee member for ACT Deafness Resource Centre and is a current “expert” on Better Hearing Australia’s Canberra Branch advisory panel.
Anne-Marie looks forward to continuing to provide cochlear implant services at Hear Life.

Testimonials

We have been helping Canberrans hear life since 1991

With a local presence since 1991, we have built strong links with the local community.
Here are some of their experiences with us....

Sue Daw OAM - Past Better Hearing Canberra President

I have had a hearing loss all my life and wear two hearing aids.  I have learnt over the years that hearing aids are only as good as the audiologist who programs them.

I have been involved with Better Hearing Australia Canberra (BHAC), a non for profit organization, helping the hearing impaired in the community, since 1994.  I first trained as an BHA Aural Rehabilitation Teacher, running Hearing Loss Management Sessions which included lipreading, coping skills and discussion.  I then ran the organization for over twenty years.

I first met Anne-Marie when she was the Manager of Australian Hearing.  She was very keen to be involved with the hearing impaired public and she willingly ran a very successful (BHAC) workshop with her technician on the importance of having a T-Switch in your hearing aids.

I always think that knowledge is power and Anne-Marie gave many presentations to our classes explaining the function of the ear, audiograms and what to think about when getting your first hearing aids.  Anne-Marie being a warm, happy person with excellent communication skills when talking with people with a hearing loss enabled her to interact well with our members and had to answer lots of questions.

I got to know Anne-Marie socially when we both were on the ACT Deafness Resources Centre (DRC) committee for many years.  As it was an evening meeting, and I had just come from teaching our evening class they provided a cuppa and something to eat to keep our strength up.  It was a good opportunity to get to know each other better.

While on this committee we formed a small subcommittee and organised the first Hearing Expo in Canberra for the hearing impaired and their families. Organizations could set up information stalls, such as audiologist who could talk about hearing aids and Cochlear implants, those selling Assistive Listening Devices could demonstrate their produces and self help groups like ours could talk about our classes.  These Expos have been very popular for the hearing impaired and their families and friends to come and get more information about coping better with their hearing loss.  These Hearing Expos have run ever since until last year when the COVID virus put a stop to it.

When Anne-Marie left Australian Hearing she joined Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre (SCIC) in their Canberra office.  An Ear Nose and Throat specialist had commenced cochlear implant surgeries in Canberra the year before and, with Anne-Marie joining and then going on to manage the clinic, this allowed for further growth. They then joined with RIDBC Sydney in Canberra.

In our BHAC Hearing loss Managements Classes we encourage discussion as part of our classes.  Those who have had Cochlear Implants and have Anne-Marie as their audiologist have had nothing but praise for her mapping skills and her professionalism as an audiologist as well as her empathy and encouragement.

Over the years Anne-Marie has always attended our BHAC Christmas Party and our members have loved to have the opportunity to talk to her in a social setting.  She also attends our Rediscovering Music Sessions, which have been running for nine years.   This special music programme started for people with cochlear implants when the cochlear was mainly programmed for speech not music, as well as people with hearing aids.  In these sessions we have had people with an implant cry because they had been able to enjoy music again after many years.  All our members enjoy these sessions some with hearing aids and some with implants and also their family members attend too. They enjoy having another opportunity to meet Anne-Marie socially.

In her support of BHAC she has been on our expert panel for many years, and willingly provides us with professional information on hearing loss, hearing aids and cochlear implant when we need this specialized information.

I feel very lucky to have met Anne-Marie Crowe over 20 years ago and have had the benefit of her knowledge, advice, assistance and friendship.

Carol Taloni - previous Tinnitus Australia Canberra branch member, current President of Better Hearing Canberra Inc

I have known Sanyo, Audiologist, for about 20 years.

She is not my personal Audiologist, but as President and Teacher for Better

Hearing Australia Canberra Inc ( BHAC), I know many of her clients and the respect they have for her.

Sanyo is very professional in her dealings with her clients. It is important that clients clearly understand the information and options available to them and the instructions given by the Audiologist.  Sanyo has good communications skills, which is vital, when dealing with those who are hearing impaired.

I wish Sanyo every success in the new business Hear Life.

I have also known Anne-Marie for over 20 years.  She is a professional Audiologist whose expertise is reflected in the communication, patience and rapport that I have observed with her clients.  She believes in giving the highest quality care to ensure good outcomes.

She has come as Guest Speaker to my Hearing Loss Management  - Lip Reading Classes.

She has willingly given her time to explain about hearing loss and demonstrate hearing aids and cochlear implants to those attending.

She has been empathetic to their needs and listened and answered their questions in great detail.
